Do coily-haired folks need all these steps?

I independently review everything I recommend. When you buy through my links, I may earn a commission. See more details here.

According to Google, the Abbey Yung method is a hair care routine focused on improving hair health, strength, and shine through consistent, multi-step care, often utilizing both drugstore and high-end products. Key components include washing as needed (not strictly stretching days), using pre-wash oils for protection, double-cleansing, incorporating bond-repair treatments, and using leave-in conditioners with heat protection.

If you want to see her full guide on Instagram its linked here.

Nothing is wrong with this method. I think it seems pretty solid, however, as a coily curly hair girlie I feel like i’ve been down this rabbit hole before. Following trends and loading up my bathroom sink with tons of products I never use and dumping them to replace them with newer, shiner products.

I want to walk through a few of her steps, talk about my specific hair needs, and I hope some of this will resonate with you for you to pick whats best for you.

I have both fine hair and low porosity hair meaning my hair is subject to things easily like breakage, oiliness, and lack of volume. When I do straighten my hair I lose alot of volume.

Because I have low porosity hair it takes a long time for products to penetrate the hair shaft and keep my hair moisturized. This also means I am prone to alot of dryness then put ontop of that my hair is more fragile because it stays “wet” alot and I have color treated hair.

In comes 2025 and I learn about Epres. Now I want to make the disclosure here that I am an affiliate. I was exposed to the brand when they send me free products and I never looked back since. I had moved to a new city, post divorce, and my hair was the last thing on the menu I was caring about. Struggling, stressed, and putting my hair in tight braids every 4 weeks was causing damage to my edges and my hair was unwell.

I would struggle to remember to care for my hair and I would rush through wash day to get my hair braided. I am also HORRIBLE at blow drying my own hair so I would struggle showing up to my hair appointments. Not the fault of my stylist but just me.

They fact that when I saw her method started and was centered around bond repair, I believe her and I think thats my first line of defense for my coils. Protect, moisturize, cleanse, and repeat.

As a coily or curly haired person reading this. You do not need 3 different shampoos, I repeat you do NOT need to use three different shampoos but you do need to find a cleansing method that you can stick to and that fits your scalp needs. I am not a dermatologist nor am I a cosmetologist but those of us who have been down this rabit hole have heard a thing or two about a clean scalp is a healthy scalp. Focus your shampoo whether its medicated or not mainly on your scalp and try to eliminate over-washing your strands.

Use hair masks atleast once a week or every two weeks. It should fall in-line with your washing schedule.

Find a conditioner with ingredients that work best for your hair needs and I still use the loc method. Liquid, oil, then cream. Liquid conditioner, oil to seal your moisture, and “cream” is more so your styling products. I don’t know if heat protectors are actually backed by science i’ve heard so many things over so many years but it can’t help to keep using them and Abbey does recommend them.

Beyond that, thats where my “expertise” lies. I will list some links for products I adore and use and I added the entire list of products below that is recommended in her method for you to easily find. Most of the links are on Amazon as Amazon is a global retailer. I hope this helps someone out there.

Below I am also going to suggest satin pillow cases I love and hair care tools and products I personally love and use.
